We propose alternative thinking as a way to balance “bias thinking", which is how our minds naturally work. We refer to "bias" as the tendency of choosing a specific alternative over others. Biases are part of how we learn. They are created because our minds are subconsciously and automatically, looking for ways to save time and effort, which leads us to develop automatic, pre-determined responses to deal with everything happening around us. While this might work great when we want to learn a skill or habit, it might not be so great when we encounter events that require diverse solutions. It can be unhelpful to think we can effectively approach diverse situations using automatic, pre-determined responses. Just like managing and adjusting our breathing improves our performance when exercising, managing our biases and considering alternatives allows us to produce more effective responses and increase our chances of success when dealing with important situations.
