OCA acknowledges we can't CONTROL our life outcomes, but we can INFLUENCE. We are here to share tools, strategies and support youth with foster care experience in their development journey.

Alternative Living - Youth Mentorship and System Navigators

Objectives:

Our mentoring initiative is based on the philosophy of Unconditional Care. Unconditional Care is often used to improve mental health outcomes and is a common alternative to Wraparound services.

Through the Alternative Living program we match youth with a mentor that is focused on getting to know them, building a relationship with them and is responsible for their coordination of services. This program promotes the consideration of services that are co-created and/or approved by the youth we serve.

Components:

  • Match participants with a mentor
  • Provide 1-1 support
  • Share strategies for self-management and healthy relationship building
  • Empower and integrate youth voices into the intervention planning and design
  • Help youth leverage housing and rental assistance programs for economic stability and well-being
  • Coordinate mental and physical health services
  • Coordinate informal recreational activities
  • Promote workforce development, higher education, and social capital for income generation
  • Help youth be more prepared to deal with the challenges they face

Goal

To support foster youth's career development, supportive networks, housing navigation and the development of tools, goals, behaviors and thoughts that lead them to be who they wan to be.

OCA catalyzes socioeconomic growth and well-being for foster youth through:

  • positive social connections & 1-1 mentoring
  • direct support from peers with lived experience
  • access to social learning opportunities and cultural activities
  • leveraging local community support and developing social capital
  • workforce development and preparation for higher education
  • facilitating alternatives to support mental and physical health
  • experience based-strategies for self-management
  • stable and engaging environments
  • support in daily life and emergency situations

Examples of how mentoring can look like:

  • co-creating an intervention plan with youth
  • provide transportation
  • help set up living space
  • celebrate important events
  • help navigate community support
  • helping youth apply for jobs and prepare for interviews
  • teaching youth how to draft letters and documents
  • accompanying youth to doctor's visits, shopping, errands
  • conversations about how humans and the mind works
  • researching housing and rental assistance programs
  • coordination of mental and physical health services
  • small cash grants and financial planning
  • conversations about developing healthy habits
  • home visits
  • coordinate and participate in social activities such as going to the movies, having dinner, going to the beach, taking a road trip, concerts, and others
  • and more

In the end, being a mentor is mostly about holding space and being present.
